Fixing your sliding glass door will save you a great deal of money by not having to hire a handyman. Check out these do-it-yourself tips for sliding glass door repair:
The Track
The problem with your sliding glass door might be coming from the track it slides on. Clean the track and clear any obstructions that can hinder the door from sliding easily. Take a vacuum with an extension hose and suck out debris from the crevasses. A loose track will also prevent the door from sliding correctly. Check the track for loose screws. Use a screwdriver or drill gun tighten any loose screws you find.
Replace the latch mechanism if it is not working correctly. It is much more simple to replace the whole mechanism rather than replace specific parts. Go to a home improvement store and consult with an expert on where to find a sliding door latch mechanism. Carefully read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper installation.
Get a screen replacement kit if your screen door is significantly ripped. Check to see if the screen door rollers are correctly placed on the track if it is not sliding correctly. Double check to see if there are any obstructions on the track causing it not to slide.
Sliding problems might be caused by worn out rollers. To check this, remove the glass door from the tracks and examine the rollers underneath. Spin the rollers with your finger to see if any are stuck. Lubricate the rollers with WD-40 to loose them. Replace all of the rollers if they are significantly worn. It is better to replace them all at once so they function uniformly.
Note: Be extra careful when removing a glass door. Always have another person to help in case you loose grip of the door. Glass doors are heavy and they are not something you want to shatter on yourself!
