- Have another job lined up. This makes the transition much easier and more leverage for reasons why you are leaving.

- Think through the need for openness in your current positions. Do you want prospective employers contacting your current employer for job references? If you do, be open with your supervisors and let them know why you are looking at other options.
- Give your current employers plenty of notice. Two weeks is standard, however, some companies may require six weeks. Check your employee handbook.
- Give your resignation letter to your direct supervisor. Make additional copies for your company's Human Resources department as well as one for your personal files.
- Finish out your stay with your company. Work hard for your last remaining weeks to leave your company on a good note. On you last day, arrive with a good attitude and a thank you card for your supervisor. Final impressions will be important for future job references!
