The search for a specific book or a simple good read can be a delight and a challenge. Have a look at these ideas when you're next on a book hunt.
Check your local library. This is the best place to start: you can peruse newly published books as well as the classics, and you can browse specific books to decide if you want to read them or not. You have the option of either checking out books right away, or heading to the bookstore to buy your own copy.
Check the local bookstore. This is also a great place to search for books, as these will often have the latest releases, and you can ask the staff about specific books.
Check the local thrift store. It is often quite surprising what one can find stacked away in the book nook at a secondhand store. I have found many stunning finds at the thrift store as well as at library book sales – all for exceedingly low prices.
Check online. If you are unable to find a copy of a specific book, you can often find it on Amazon.com. It is also possible that the book is out of print or carried by just a few publishers.
You can also check to see if the book is available as a free e-book. Check out gutenberg.com or searchebooks.com or onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu.
Check used online stores. Amazon.com and abebooks.com and alibris.com all sell used books that may be difficult to find locally. Ebay.com also often has reasonably-priced books on auction.
Check your friends' shelves. Ask around your circle of friends and colleagues as to whether they know of a copy that you could borrow. Chances are your friends will be quite willing to lend you a copy if they have one.
