Classroom management techniques are the key to running a class smoothly and effectively. Follow these tips on classroom behavior management for teachers and find yourself with a successfully run classroom:
Establish yourself as an authority figure from the beginning. The first few days of class are the most important for instilling classroom behavior. It is the time where you teach routines, set a classroom tone and establish classroom rules. Have rules set up before hand and know how you want the class to run. The students should be made aware of consequences to bad behavior.
Handle misbehavior correctly. Do not yell at misbehavior, but talk sternly to students who do wrong in a low, stern voice. It is better to speak to students one-on-one making eye contact, as public reprimanding can humiliate, cause resentment and make the child want to save face rather than apologize and change their behavior. You don't want your students to resent you, but to respect you and want to behave well.
Be someone the students want to like. In order for your students to respect you, you must respect your students. Encourage your them and use positive reinforcement techniques. Plan fun activities for the students in class and try to help them enjoy learning. Students are much more willing to participate and behave if they are engaged, encouraged and feel appreciated.
Plan an effective seating arrangement. As you get to know your students, place desks and arrange seating arrangements for kids to sit by others who will not distract them. Sit those that tend to misbehave up front and next to you. The order and arrangement of the desks affects the way the classroom runs, so situate desks in an organized way that allows you to move around the room and see every student.
