Writing a book report doesn't have to be a difficult task. Follow these tips to writing a book report and finish your assignment pronto!
Read the assignment. Often a book report assignment is given with some type of direction to go on. Make sure you understand what type of book report you will be writing before you begin reading the book. This way you can be taking appropriate notes for your report as you read the material. One example of book report assignments may be to identify a theme the author uses throughout the book and describe how it is portrayed. Another book report assignment might simply be to give a synopsis of the story.
Read the book analytically. As you read the book, highlight important passages and mark pages with post-it-notes. Look for key phrases that describe character development, themes, settings and plot development within the text. Take notes on your thoughts about different aspects of the book as you read. You should be able to identify the main point of the book and how the author demonstrates this point.
Brainstorm. After you have read the book, look through your notes and decide how to answer the book report questions. It helps to write down quick answers to the questions. If there is no assignment other than to give a book report, write out the main idea of the book and how the author expresses this idea. Identify themes and literary devices in the text.
For example, an assignment may be to analyze the character development of the protagonist (main character) of the story. Write down quick thoughts on how this character changed throughout the story. Identify what events in the story line shaped this character and caused them to change.
Planning. Once you have your ideas written out for the book report prepare an outline to follow as you write. Start with a thesis statement (i.e. "The character Bart in the book Tomorrow Night, by Pete Soso, turns from a boy into a man throughout the story."). Decide in what order you will present the supporting points to prove your thesis (or answer to the assignment question). Go through your notes and marked pages for quotes and examples to use from the book.
Writing. You can begin the book report with a catchy introduction, or simply start with your thesis statement. Make sure to identify the name of the book, the author and main point of the book in your introduction. Follow your outline to answer the book report assignment prompt. Make sure to quote from which pages you use examples from the text. For a conclusion you should summarize the overall significance of the book, and what you can learn from it as a reader.
Proofread. Before handing your book report in, print it out and go through it with a pen. Mark any mistakes you find and go back and change them. If any of your ideas are not clearly expressed in the report, rework and rewrite them until your report is concise, clear and easy to read.
Hand it in! You should now have an A quality book report. The key to a good book report is fully answering the questions on the assignment.
