The most common way to treat embarrassing dandruff is to use antidandruff shampoos. In the years that my family and I have suffered from dandruff problems I have come to know what to look for in antidandruff products. Here is a compilation of 5 effective ingredients to look for in antidandruff shampoos.

This antifungal fights against the fungus pityrosporum that causes dandruff. Your local drug store will sell antidandruff shampoo that contains either 1-2.5% selenium sulfide. I have found that the product Selsun Blue is very effective.
Is an antifungal used to treat many skin problems, including dandruff. Shampoos that have ketoconazole include Perkhotal by Gepack International and Nizoral by Johnson & Johnson.
Itching and irritation associated with dandruff can be put under control with shampoo products that include salicylic acid. It also reduces flaking of the scalp.
Products that contain slicylic acid and sulfur as antidandruff shampoos include Essential Care Dandruff Shampoo, Meted, Coraz, Pernox, Sebex, and Sebulex.
Also an antifungal and additionally an antibacterial, pyritione zinc fights the fungus that causes dandruff. My favorite product that has this ingredient is Head and Shoulders.
Coal tar is the oldest known way to treat skin problems and is best used for extreme dandruff and psoriasis disorders. It is my understanding that coal tar slows the growth of skin cells and regeneration thus reducing and eliminating excessive amount of dead skin build up. Brand names to look for with coal tar include Denorex, Neutrogena T/Gel, Pentrax, Tegrin and Zetar.
